CNN Roadtrip

July 25th, 2008 · No Comments

A couple of employees from the CNN.com crew plan to drive from California to Georgia on biodiesel fuel.

We’ll be testing GPS navigation gear and other cool gadgets to see how they work during a real road trip. But because it’s a road trip, we’ll also be camping and enjoying some of the most spectacular sites in the Southwest and Southeastern United States. And we’ll be asking CNN.com users to suggest destinations and to vote on where we travel.

Cody and Brian have both been here for years and it will be interesting to follow their journey across the country in Cody’s 1978 International Harvester Scout.

One trillion

July 25th, 2008 · No Comments

1,000,000,000,000 equals one trillion, which of course is quite a lot.  Well Google commented today that they have this many active URL’s in their index.  Back in 2000 they hit the billion mark and the first index in 1998 had only 26 million pages.

How do we find all those pages? We start at a set of well-connected initial pages and follow each of their links to new pages. Then we follow the links on those new pages to even more pages and so on, until we have a huge list of links. In fact, we found even more than 1 trillion individual links, but not all of them lead to unique web pages. Many

iPhone 3G still in stock

July 13th, 2008 · 2 Comments

So much like last year when the day after the launch you could stroll in to the Apple Store with no wait and still get an iPhone it looks like this year you can too.  I checked the availability onlne and the Lenox Square store still shows all three models in stock.

I don’t think I am heading out to upgrade just yet, but it is nice to see that you didn’t have to wait in line for 12 hours unless you just had to have it on Friday.

Most of the Atlanta stores still have them in stock, although some are sold out of specific models (the black 16GB typically).  As a side note it seems they take down the …

New iPhone software delivers

July 11th, 2008 · No Comments

atlanta 005Well I took advantage last night of pulling down the latest firmware and checking out the new features.  It delivers on everything and if you don’t mind the EDGE network speed you get a pretty significant update for free.

I was able to connect to my office via ActiveSync and use our Cisco VPN to connect to the internal servers.  Now I still don’t care for the touch keyboard but the new features make it worth trying again.  I like that the VPN connecting even works over the EDGE network.

I also downloaded a few apps to play with and think opening the platform up will be the key

So is it the Short Head then?

July 2nd, 2008 · 1 Comment

OK, so now we have a  counterpoint to "The Long Tail" from a few years ago.  While I read and bought in to the premise that the Internet was helping to free everyone to explore and engage with the vast catalogs available thanks to digital distribution we now have a new report to consider.

Anita Elberse analyzed data for music downloads and movie rentals and showed that while the long tail was indeed getting longer it wasn’t really getting fatter.  In fact her analysis showed that the blockbusters were holding or gaining in their share.

Point: In 2006, "The Long Tail" made a splash arguing that the Internet, with its expansive shelf space,
