Can you trust the source?

Just a question everyone should be thinking about as you read news [or anything] online. The recent problems for Wikipedia illustrate how you can’t always believe what you read. As big media (CNN for example) looks to engage with the users (blog’s, wiki’s, etc.) we have to consider the most important issue is how to trust each other.

Now CNN brings with it a certain degree of trust. We aren’t immune to reporting incorrectly but you can rely that we have vetted our sources and looked for independent confirmation. As you read over Wikipedia and other sources for news you have to consider that although reputable they may not have the same news gathering power that we have.

You have to balance that against those with more direct knowledge of specific topics. I certainly would trust the Firefox blog to report on new features but I wouldn’t rely on their knowledge of the marital status of Jessica Simpson.
