Serving the minority

Finally catching up with the feeds after a vacation and I was reading about how Target was getting a little [negative] publicity last week due to a lawsuit from the National Federation of the Blind.  It seems that Target ignored a request 10 months ago regarding the lack of accessibility on its site and only reacted after the lawsuit was filed.  Shame on them.  I don’t want to claim that the websites I help manage are perfect, but if someone came to me/us and pointed out an obvious issue with a page we would fix it.  Some of the complaints were so easy, alt tags missing for example, that would take someone only minutes to correct.

It will be nice when the web reaches the same level of awareness we have in construction.  How many buildings get built today that don’t have wheelchair access?  I expect websites will eventually reach this level but it is a shame that these groups have to fight the same fight over and over.
