Read this story today and think Google is spot on in giving away these chunks of code. Now any Joe, like myself, can put useful tools like Gmail or the top new headlines on their own homepage. I never used the custom Google page as I mostly delved straight into search results using the Firefox keyword shortcut but I do have a start page so now in clicking home I can add a few more items to make the day a little faster and easier.
