This morning we learned that the new Flash beta is available (coming to everyone this Fall via an update) and it adds quite a few goodies.

Adobe’s introduced a powerful new component it’ll be placing into its Flash Video Player 9, adding support for that red-hot H.264 codec, the video compression routine that’s behind Blu-ray, HD DVD and lots of HD goodness all over the videoscape. Adobe’s also heightened the efficiency of Flash audio, adding AAC audio compression. Perhaps the most important part of the announcement is the addition of hardware acceleration for playback of all different types of full-screen video.

Not mentioned above are other items such as improvements to the External Interface API which exposes a little more functionality to JavaScript. That combined with the likelihood you will be able to get Flash video working on an iPhone (thanks to H.264) means this could be a rush to new players.

Now we can see how Silverlight and Flash (with AIR) will change the way we build web apps.
