Gmail IMAP disappeared

April 16th, 2008 · 30 Comments

So I set up to use Gmail as a nice way to keep an archive of email that I can use across multiple machines.  Well today Outlook (I happen to be on a PC at the time) gave me a nice alert that stated your account doesn’t support IMAP.  I hopped to the browser and logged in to see what was going on and sure enough that account no longer has IMAP listed on the settings page.

So what happened?  I certainly haven’t moved much content (~150MB over a few weeks) and coming off vacation it hasn’t seen much use at all.  I did a quick search - no luck.  So now I have to wait and see if this comes back or whether something has flagged this account.

Update: Now I notice TechCrunch reports it as well.  And they say it is back.  Off to check again.

Not just you. This just happened to me. Yours is the first/only search result. This makes two of us! :(.

Noticing this as well, and as stated you are the only/first result I found when trying to find anyone mentioning it.

This just happened to me, within the last hour. IMAP isn’t even listed on the settings page now.

It seems to be quite wide-spread. Or at least I have the same problem, as do a few friends of mine.

I also see the old version of Gmail when I log into the webmail, and the chat part says that “We’re experiencing technical difficulties that may prevent your chats from being sent.”

I guess some pipes got stuck somewhere.

This happened to me too on Google Apps for Your Domain.

Having the same problem too. No imap. I have it set up in iCal but everything seems to be working fine. My gmail account is set up through imap and my outgoing messages have been going through fine.
    Weird.

Same here, I had to accounts that I actively used IMAP one, they are now back to POP3/forwarding only what gives?

I just noticed the same thing, about 20 minutes ago. There’s no settings page for it on any of the 4 gmail accounts I’ve checked, but this is the only peep about it I can find anywhere.

Happened to me too. I found your site trying to figure out the problem… strange.

I’m experiencing the same issue here….does anybody have a solution?

  • 15 joe // Apr 16, 2008 at 4:15 pm

    me too! Ditto

Me too. Using Google Apps for Domains (unpaid version). It just started up in the last hour or so. Like others, the IMAP options have disappeared from the GMail settings.

    I hope it’s just a glitch, because I can’t function without IMAP.

Chalk one more up for missing imap. My guess is either something really oops-tastic has happened and they’re working on it, or they couldn’t find a way to upgrade to a newer implimentation w/o taking down the existing one for a while. (1 gmail, 1 google apps acount)

I’m done with Gmail. I have 5 hosted domains. IMAP is gone. What kills me is there is no tech support to get fast answers from.

Same here, our company depends on imap support through google apps.

10 million iPhones scream in pain.

  • 21 Peter // Apr 16, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Me too. Missing IMAP forwarding. Using it for iPhone.

  • 22 Anthony // Apr 16, 2008 at 4:23 pm

    its back!!!

  • 23 Renaldo // Apr 16, 2008 at 4:23 pm

It looks like it’s back up.

  • 24 Tim // Apr 16, 2008 at 4:24 pm

Google Apps control panel now has a prominent message on the top saying “your users may be having trouble accessing email.” Says they’re working on it.

  • 25 ran // Apr 16, 2008 at 4:24 pm

ditto. Outlook kept giving me the “IMAP not available on your account message” and when logged in via the web, the IMAP option has disappeared.

  • 26 Charles // Apr 16, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Same prob here, quite miffed, to put it nicely.

  • 27 Quella // Apr 16, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Me here also. My iPhone is not happy nor is Outlook… HELP. App Domain here and a regular Gmail account…

  • 28 gtyree // Apr 16, 2008 at 4:38 pm

Seems to be back for me. Now we can wait for an explanation.

[...] вкладке Forwarding IMAP просто исчез. Погуглил. Оказывается не я один такой. Это что, шара закончилась? Или Гугл так ненавязчиво [...]
