It is wild to think back on how far we have advanced in covering this event. From the 1996 Election where our results system was a Webmaster huddled over his computer and Election terminal to now where a full team of developers has built and supported a system feeding both TV and the web.

I have the benefit of leading an outstanding team that made this look easy. Kudos to all of them for the hard work and preparation for last night.

Well I mentioned before that I planned to visit the Waffle House museum nearby and this weekend with the in-laws here it seemed like the perfect chance. It was pretty cool and the staff there was very knowledgeable about the history.

It was fun to hear about the start back in the 50’s, and according to the staff they currently have ~1600 stores across the South. They said the have resisted making the stores any larger due to the long standing processes and efficiencies they have created around the precise setup in the stores. They continually run studies on the use of the space, including counting steps and time to perform routine actions. So in making the stores larger they would through off all their tuned processes. This helps explain why you see two stores on opposite sides of the highway.

Other Decatur bloggers covered it as well and posted lots of pictures (and more). It was also nice to learn that the upper Management team is largely Georgia Tech aumni.

It seems September and now October have turned out to be even busier than I expected - both at work and at home. I realized I hadn’t said much of anything for almost a month so I wanted to get something out. In early Sept. I had something happen that caused me to change course. A visit to Emory for a Heart Scan revealed that I had some risks, both from genetics and from my own doing.

That was enough to get me going - I have started paying close attention to what I eat and have a few goals to get myself on a course that will significantly lower my risks. It has been just over a month and all is well so far. I haven’t felt like it has been a tough sacrifice to give up certain things and since I am still quite active I have quickly dropped some weight.

It feels good to get back into college shape and ideally I will even get into the best shape of my life in the coming months. I am not sure if other major hospitals offer a deal on a similar test, but for anyone with a family history of heart issues I strongly recommend getting yourself screened.

So will we really still be waiting for HTML 5 to get ratified in 2022? Of course the browsers will be supporting the new version before then and we are starting to see the advancements creep into browsers already. They likely will fully support the spec ahead of its official launch but this means that interpretations and more critically implementations can be slightly different and those left building the websites are stuck doing what we do now, accommodate all the variations in how browsers handle the code.

Ian Hickson, the editor of the HTML 5 specification, recently outlined the time table for HTML 5 and, even assuming browser manufacturers embrace HTML 5 when it reaches the final draft stage, that puts HTML 5’s widespread adoption at 2012. Worse, the final proposed recommendation won’t be released until 2022.
